Utah Research Trip: 8 Days, 21 Hikes & 2000 Driving Miles

Last week, I took my final research trip for my 50 Hikes in Utah book. Though I'd already done 30 hikes, I "messed up" one of the earlier ones--so I did 21 hikes on trip. David couldn't come with me this time, but my mother surprised me by driving down from Montana and joining for a few days--which was awesome, and totally unexpected!

Little Cottonwood Canyon

Well, it turns out that we're not the only ones sucking in Joe's Valley. The weather also gets pretty lame in Joe's sometimes -and recently it's been either so rainy or so hot that we've been unable to climb at all or unable to climb to the top of anything.

Really the weather hasn't even been that bad. But it's definitely starting to seem like bouldering season is over in this part of the world.

Anyway- we didn't feel like driving all the way to Joe's again today -so we kept it local and ran immediately into friends Myranda "I'm Watching You" Bair, Arthur Debowski, and Jason Danforth all trying to drag their bodies up the boulders of Little Cottonwood Canyon.

The conditions in Little were certainly far from "sending temps", but we climbed that place like it never had been climbed before. And when we ran out of fingertip skin, we played fun and invasive games with soothing banana peels.

Comp/ Bouldering in Little Cottonwood

This weekend we had to stay in SLC, as David had to build problems for a competition at The Front. Having not done competitions in some years, I decided to join.

The Plastic Passion Comp, The Front, Salt Lake City.

The following day, the weather was really nice. And despite David's fingers having unclimbably bad splits, my body being tired from the comp, and my guidebook being in Montana, and the canyons being somewhat covered in snow, we decided to head to Little Cottonwood Canyon to find some slab bouldering and fresh air.

Me on an unknown slab.

Taking lunch in the warm, warm sun.

David sending an unknown, wet, hard slab. (I know; I tried...)

On Shingles.
