Chulilla, Spain - New Climbs in an Old Area

While climbing in Spain’s Costa Blanca in 2012 we were encouraged to visit Chulilla, an area to the north that came highly recommended. We were told that if we liked Wild Side at Sella – and we did – we’d really enjoy Chulilla since the climbing was similar: long, gently-overhanging routes with plenty of limestone tufas. A year later we were back in Spain, Valencia to be exact. Upon arriving in Chulilla we were suitably impressed. The climbing zone featured a pair of deep gorges with tall, tufa-streaked walls. Sound good? Read on for more beta…

Happy New Year! Thank you Mammut!

Thank you Mammut for a fabulous year! Cheers to a Great 2014!
Reflecting on an amazing year of adventure, friendships, and support from Mammut, I am ever more excited to be planning for 2014. Our trip to the Arctic Circle was a trip of a lifetime, and I look forward to many more adventures with Mammut! I have a deep gratitude for the support and encouragement from Dean Lords, our team manager, and all the awesome staff at Mammut, thank you for believing in me!

A Powder Magazine realization

I remember as a kid, going to Warren Miller films or reading ski magazines and thinking to myself that I would never be able to lead the lifestyle of the ski bum, living in Vermont. All photos and videos were of men, usually shot in Jackson Hole or somewhere else far away, and it was hard for me to relate to that image of skiing.  I went through the race program at the Mount Mansfield Winter Academy here in the green mountain state, and kind of forgot about my dream of “extreme skiing,” or freeskiing as we call it now. It was not until after college, when I moved out to Crested Butte, Colorado that I started to consider signing up for a competition. I dedicated my time for the next few seasons to training hard and working on my progression in the sport, and I was happily encouraged by decent standings in the events. At the end of the day, however, I still felt like I was far away from what I had imagined being a ski bum would be. There was a lot of work and not enough play.

Sledding and the Northwest Update!

Kids have fun with Mammut too!
I took my 3 year old god-daughter sledding for the first time and she adored it! We are up here in Whistler, awaiting the snow that is suppose to be falling in about an hour. The season in the Northwest has started out great, Stevens, Crystal, Baker, and Whistler are all stacked with snow and more is promised on the way.

Changing seasons in the Rockies

Running from Crested Butte to Aspen, CO on a late summer day

It's been a hectic late summer and fall season so far.  First off, my wife and I moved from Los Alamos, NM to Denver, CO in August and I have been trying to take advantage of living at the base of the Colorado Rockies as much as possible.  The weekend after moving, I joined good friends for a 40ish mile run from Crested Butte to Aspen, CO.  We passed through some beautiful scenery and paid way too much for pizza and beer at the end of the day in Aspen.  The next week, my friend Phil Wortmann talked me into "running" Kiener's Route on Longs Peak, a classic mountaineering route that traces up the edge of the Diamond face.

AMGA Rock Courses

Being a part of the American Mountain Guides Association Instructor Team means I get to spend a good portion of the fall teaching up and coming guides the ins and outs of leading clients through the vertical world. This year I was able to teach Rock Instructor Courses in North Conway, NH; Smith Rock, OR and Red Rocks, NV as well as an Advanced Rock Guide Course in Red Rocks.
